Computerized fluid dynamic
Kolektor Turboinštitut has long-term expertise with CFD simulations for hydraulic machines (turbines, pumps, converters) with unique and daily links with experimental data. Nowadays very accurate prediction of energetic, cavitation and dynamics characteristics of all kind of turbo machines can be obtained using up-to-date CFD software. Simulations of the complete machine, which consists of stationary and rotational parts using 2 to 5-million elements, are used daily as development tools for model development and analyses of prototype flow characteristics.
The advantage of CFD in comparison with model test is the prediction of losses in all parts of the pump or turbine and on the basis of CFD results, characteristics improvements can be done more efficient. As a result of these factors, CFD is now an established industrial design tool, helping to reduce design timescales and improve processes throughout the engineering world. CFD provides a cost-effective and accurate alternative to scale model testing, with variations on the simulation being performed quickly, offering obvious advantages.
In the near future, a regional High Performance Computing Centre (HPCC) for fluid flow simulations, with hardware capacity of 1000 parallel processors, will be established. In addition to the needs of Kolektor Turboinštitut, the HPCC - LSC Adria will also serve a number of universities in SE Europe and Europe as well as other countries. These institutions will develop their skills and capabilities in flow simulations for all renewable energy sources and water supply.
